Description

Although I have lived in Ottawa since 93 my hometown is Sydney, Nova Scotia, on the island of Cape Breton. Cape Breton is a world famous tourist destination for good reason it a beautiful and magical place. I took this pic in 05, this huge fiddle was put on the wharf where the cruise ships dock when they arrive at Sydney.

Cape Breton was mainly settled by Gaelic speaking people from the Scottish Highlands, and in my case by people from the Hebrides. A significant percentage of Highlanders emigrated to Cape Breton in the 1800s and they took their language, music and dance to their new location where it continued to thrive, while back in Scotland celebrating the Gaelic culture was discouraged by the British Government.

Today Cape Breton is recognized for its rich Gaelic culture and many people come from around the world to attend the the Gaelic College [link]

The fiddle was a particularly important instrument in the Gaelic culture and the settlers remembered and continued to play songs from their homeland, as well they began to write new songs for their new land. The Cape Breton style of fiddling is very distinctive and recognized around the world. Cape Breton has produced countless great fiddlers over the years, here is a link to the wiki page [link]

The people of Cape Breton decided to honor the significance of the fiddle by erecting this huge fiddle on the waterfront, the first thing many tourists will see when they get off the cruise ship.

I can’t really do justice to Cape Breton history in this little note, here is another great site for anyone who is interested [link]

Anyway Sydney flourished in the first half of the 20th Century. The city’s main industry was a Steel plant which used coal from many of the surrounding towns that mined coal. By the late 1960’s the steel and coal industries in the area began to collapse. The population of Sydney has declined as many people, including me, were forced to leave the area to find employment.
